Markham councillors appointed to chair general and development services committees

Announcement comes after new Markham council inaugurated in November

On Feb. 8, the chairs and vice-chairs of Markham council’s standing committees were established and ratified. It has been over two months since members of the new Markham council were sworn in at the Nov. 15 meeting.

“I am proud of the leadership and vision my colleagues will bring to these integral positions at the City of Markham,” said Mayor Frank Scarpitti. “I am confident they will continue to lead and invest in important projects and initiatives while delivering outstanding services that benefits the Markham community.”

“I look forward to working with the appointees over the next four years as we continue to make Markham a great place to live, work and play,” he added.

The general committee is made up of all members of council. It reports and makes recommendations to council on issues relating to city-owned land and buildings, administrative matters relating to city policies, human resources, financial management and budgets, bylaws and licences, community service policies including recreation and community organizations, cultural affairs, roads, park construction, environmental management and sustainability issues, fire and other protective services.

Here are the appointments of the general committee’s chair and vice--chairs:

Finance and Administrative

Chair: Keith Irish, Ward 1 councillor

Vice--Chair: Michael Chan, Deputy Mayor

Community Services

Chair: Isa Lee, Ward 8 councillor

Environment and Sustainability

Chair: Amanda Yeung Collucci, Ward 6 councillor

Vice-Chair: Ritch Lau, Ward 2 councillor

Land, Building and Parks Construction

Chair: Andrew Keyes, Ward 5 councillor

Vice--Chair: Keith Irish, Ward 1 councillor

The development services committee is also comprised of all members of council and reports and makes recommendations to council on issues relating to: the City’s official plan, including land use planning, urban design guidelines, transportation and servicing infrastructure, environmental assessment, housing and heritage policies, parks and public open space policy and standards, and economic development and culture strategy.

Appointments of the Development Services Committee’s chair and vice--chairs include:

Planning -- Development and Policy

Chair: Jim Jones, Regional councillor

Vice--Chair: Joe Li, Regional councillor (also chair public hearings)

Culture and Economic Development

Chair: Alan Ho, Regional councillor

Vice--Chair: Amanda Yeung Collucci, Ward 6 councillor

Engineering -- Transportation and Infrastructure

Chair: Karen Rea, Ward 4 councillor

Vice--Chair: Reid McAlpine, Ward 3 councillor

The budget committee will be chaired by Ward 5 Coun. Andrew Keyes and vice--chaired by Ward 8 Coun. Isa Lee.
