A York Regional Police crime prevention officer will share tips and strategies to protect Aurora residents at a presentation on Sunday, March 5.

The free event, organized by Coun. Rachel Gilliland, Ward 2, will be held at the Aurora Community Centre from 6:30.-7:30 p.m., prior to the Aurora Tigers junior-A hockey game so families can stay and root for their home team.

“While York Region is rated one of the safest communities, residents want to be well-informed, feel safe and react intelligently in situations,” said Gilliland. “We prepare ourselves in event of a home fire, we should do the same when faced with potential criminal activity.”

The presentation topic is “Robberies, Car Thefts, and Home Invasions” and attendees will learn about YRP’s crime prevention community portal and receive information take-aways. A YRP detective will also be available to answer questions.

“One of the top conversations I shared with residents at the door during my campaign was the growing concern over the last couple of years in respect to an increase in auto thefts, robberies, and home invasions,” said Gilliland. “I’ve also noticed posts on social media of cars and deliveries being stolen, trespassing, or of strangers snooping around.”

Gilliland hopes the event will bring the community together and raise awareness. Future events may include discussions on cyberbullying and fraud prevention for seniors.
