Just over four years ago Estella Jean Chea, her three brothers, mother and niece came to Canada as refugees from Ghana.

In an interview with the King Connection in July, Chea described her life in Canada as “so much better” because of the opportunities available to her and her family.

Chea has worked with children and pursued an education. She is now a permanent resident and wants to stay here. “This is where my future lies,” she said at the time.

The 24-year-old was partially blind when she arrived, but had surgery in Canada to correct her vision.

Chea and her family are just one example of the value immigrants bring to King and the impact they have on the community. Her story was published for Canada Day to highlight that part of what makes Canada great is the people who choose to make this country their home.

King Mayor Steve Pellegrini said he admired people who follow their dreams and come to live across the world.

“I’m very cognizant of the fact that Canada is a mosaic and our diversity is what makes us special,” he added.
