Here's how to dispose of your Christmas tree in Newmarket

Christmas tree collection starts this week in Newmarket.

Residents can place their Christmas trees out with their regular garbage and recycling on their designated collection day during the week of Jan. 3 through 6 and again between Jan. 17 to 20.

Any decorations, nails, tree stands and bags must be removed.

The trees must be placed at the curb before 7 a.m. on collection day. They cannot be on top of, inside or behind a snowbank as collection staff will not climb or dig to retrieve them.

Trees that are taller than six feet must be cut in half first.

If you miss the collection dates, you can either save the tree for when yard waste collection starts in the spring or take it to a York Region waste depot that accepts yard waste. This includes the Georgina Transfer Station, Household Hazardous Waste and Recycling Depot, McCleary Court Community Environmental Centre in Vaughan, and Bloomington Yard Waste Depot, however fees apply.

Residents should follow the large item collection guidelines for any artificial trees, as they are not included in the Christmas tree collection.

You can contact Green for Life Environmental at 1-866-421-5625 or via email at WasteLine@gflenv.com for any questions or concerns.
