WHAT’S GOING ON HERE? Installation begins on last section of sewer pipe at Henderson Sewage Pumping Station

The new Henderson Sewage Pumping Station at 14452 Yonge St. will support wastewater flow in the Henderson Drive area and alleviate capacity constraints at the existing Aurora Sewage Pumping Station at St. John’s Sideroad.

Beginning mid-January, the last section of the sewer pipe, from Work Area 3 to Work Area 2, will be installed.

Jose Manalo, project manager, capital planning and delivery, public works for York Region, provided the information below as a means of keeping residents informed.

JUST THE FACTS

• The intersection at Poplar Crescent and Henderson Drive (Work Area 2) will remain temporarily closed to traffic entering or exiting Poplar Crescent. Residents and local traffic can access Poplar Crescent through the eastbound entrance on Henderson Drive. Henderson Drive will remain open to two-way traffic.
• The sidewalk near the Poplar Crescent and Henderson Drive intersection will remain temporarily closed. Directional signs are in place to help guide pedestrians.

• There will be increased construction-related traffic around Work Area 2. Traffic control measures are in place to help with the movement of traffic.
• The microtunnel drive from Work Area 1 to Work Area 2 was successfully completed. Work Area 1 is currently being restored to allow for two-way traffic; the temporary traffic lights will be removed by the end of January 2023. Full restoration of the boulevard and the remaining portion of Tamarac Green Park will happen in Spring 2023.

Microtunnelling is a construction method where a machine will tunnel underground between the work areas, installing a sewer pipe approximately 10 metres below the surface. The use of microtunnelling minimizes the impact on the environment, residents and local traffic.
