Russia’s war against Ukraine is happening on the other side of the world, but that doesn’t mean it has no effect on people in King Township.

King resident Karina Bulate knew a Ukrainian woman who had helped her family in the past and when the war broke out, Bulate asked how she could help. The woman and three other family members decided the best option was to come to live in King.

When Bulate posted on Facebook asking for donations to help the family, the community didn’t hesitate.

Mayor Steve Pellegrini saw her post and together they decided the township could get the word out about the donation request.

The number of donations they received in such a short period was “incredible,” Bulate said in a May interview.

The power of social media’s ability to connect us was noticeable when Schomberg resident Jimsie Menna started the monthly protests against the war in Ukraine.

Menna said she felt compelled to do something and has protested along with a small group at Highway 27 and Main Street on the 24th of each month ever since.
