Nobody was in the headlines more in 2022 in Stouffville than Mayor Iain Lovatt. In a re-election year, Lovatt was as busy as ever. In January, Lovatt announced the town had purchased the property on 6343 Main St. next to 19 on the Park to expand the civic square. “This is a very unique opportunity that we couldn’t pass up,” Lovatt said. “Expanding urban parkland and green space in the heart of our downtown core is not an opportunity that comes up every day.

In April, he announced the start of construction on the Town’s new skating trial at Memorial Park and the Leisure Centre. “This new skating trail, which was chosen by the community as the highest priority in the parks expansion, will bring generations together, creating stronger, happier and healthier residents,” Lovatt said.

In August, Lovatt was part of announcing the new six storey affordable housing complex that is being built on Main Street.  “Moving projects like this forward across the region is so important,” he said. “In 2024, when we’re actually cutting the ribbon and opening the doors to this place, it’s going to be an emotional moment because there are people in our community and in the region that right now are really, really struggling.”

In the October election, Lovatt nearly doubled the vote total of his nearest competitor, receiving 6,125 votes (51.67 per cent). “I am extremely thankful for the opportunity to lead our municipality again,” Lovatt said following his victory.
