The Woodbridge Library is celebrating 150 years this year.

Originally founded in 1873 by John Abell, the original Woodbridge library was labelled the Mechanics Institute, a place that made books available for local factory workers.

On Monday, Jan. 16, the Vaughan Public Library (VPL) held the commemoration. Architects presented their visions and reviewed plans for the future with the public. The presentation included a display showcasing Woodbridge and its library through the decades.

“We are proud to celebrate this 150-year milestone with the people of Woodbridge and to look to the future by bringing several upgrades to the branch,” said VPL chair Rose Savage in a media release.

VPL is planning on implementing several upgrades this year to modernize the library. Planned upgrades include planned façade upgrades to improve accessibility and square footage while enhancing the library’s overall look and connection to Woodbridge Avenue.

“Libraries play a vital role in our communities, acting as places to gather, learn and play. Nowhere is that truer than right here, where the library has existed at the heart of the community since its infancy,” said VPL CEO Margie Singleton in a press release.
