York region has been placed under a weather warning by Environment Canada.

The national weather agency issued the freezing rain warning for Vaughan, Richmond Hill, Markham, Newmarket, Georgina and northern York region.

However, in addition to freezing rain, the national weather agency states, ice pellets and snow are also possible throughout Thursday afternoon and night (Jan. 19).

The "hazards" include freezing rain and ice accretion up to a few millimetres possible on untreated surfaces, with a risk of freezing drizzle Thursday night.

Freezing rain, which may be mixed with ice pellets and snow, is expected to begin Thursday afternoon. Freezing rain will transition to light flurries, possibly mixed with freezing drizzle, early Thursday evening. The risk of freezing drizzle will end Friday morning," the warning states. "Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become icy and slippery. Take extra care when walking or driving in affected areas. Ice build-up may cause tree branches to break. Utility outages may occur."
