Torontonians should pay an extra 3% in garbage and water fees effective Jan. 1, the city’s executive committee has decided.

The garbage rate increase means that single family households will pay in 2023 an annual fee of $286.69 for a small bin, $348.03 for a medium-sized bin, $472.68 for a large bin and $548.26 for an extra-large bin.

“The 2023 interim rate increase of 3% provides funding to support Solid Waste Management Services operations and capital projects, and diversion by reducing materials entering the waste stream and overall waste sent to landfill,” a staff report to committee says.

A household consuming 230 cubic metres of water a year will see a 3% increase in their annual bill from $979 to $1,009.

“The proposed 2023 interim increases to water and wastewater service fees, if approved by City Council, are expected to generate additional revenue of approximately $1.806 million, which is intended to offset the inflationary cost increases associated with delivering these services,” a staff report considered by the executive committee says.

The city adopted a 10-year plan for garbage and water rates ending in 2031 that would see an annual 3%hike.

The rate hikes are interim and could still be changed by city council in the early part of 2023.
