A largish swath of wetland in the north-west part of Oak Ridges has been experiencing higher water levels lately, which prompted the City of Richmond Hill to assess its functionality as well as its nearby stormwater management facilities.

JUST THE FACTS

The study area is bound by Bayview Avenue to the east, Worthington Avenue to the west, Snively Street to the south and Paradelle Drive to the north.

This wetland has experienced issues related to water level fluctuations, impacting some adjacent properties. The study will determine their current state, as well as identify and assess potential alternatives for improvement of the wetland’s water level conditions and to enhance the performance of the stormwater facilities.

Snively Wetland is a naturally occurring water body and is classified as a Provincially Significant Wetland as part of the Wilcox-St. George Complex. It receives drainage from about 100 hectares of land. The two adjacent stormwater ponds drain into Snively Wetland.

The study is being conducted in accordance with Schedule B of the Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (EA) process. As part of the class EA process, evaluation of alternatives, assessment of the potential environmental effects and identification of mitigation measures for potential adverse impacts will be conducted and presented through public and agency consultations.

Upon completion of the study, a project file report documenting the planning and decision-making process will be prepared and made available for public review. To facilitate community input, a public open house is scheduled to be held in spring 2023. The notice of the open house will be mailed to homes in the nearby neighbourhood.
