Expecting guests?

Going to a party or gathering where you are going to have a couple of drinks and don’t want to get behind the wheel?

Newmarket has the answer for those needing overnight parking.

Overnight parking on streets is prohibited from Nov. 1 to April 15, from 2 to 6 a.m., to avoid interfering with snow removal vehicles.

But the town is once again offering free use of four parking lots from 5 p.m. to 7 a.m. until April 15.

“This was an innovative solution to a need that was created during the pandemic with more people, and vehicles, being home,” Mayor John Taylor said.

“It’s now a permanent option each winter as a way to offer continued flexibility. I encourage residents to take advantage of these parking options so that we can keep the streets clear and provide safe snow removal during the winter months.”

All residents will be eligible to apply for and obtain a temporary parking exemption permit through the town’s online parking portal by providing their vehicle information.

Residents will be permitted to park in designated spots in one of four parking lots:

Municipal Offices at 395 Mulock Dr.

Magna Centre at 800 Mulock Dr.

Ray Twinney Recreation Complex at 100 Eagle St. W.

Downtown Newmarket --P3 Parking Lot on Doug Duncan Drive.

All permits will be issued electronically and without the need to print or place a hard copy permit within vehicles. Once registered, residents will receive important details about the rules and regulations, including that vehicles must be relocated by 7 a.m. each morning to allow for safe snow removal.

Residents should consider this option when they have overnight guests, are hosting parties and need a safe space for guests to leave their vehicle overnight if they are having a few drinks or to leave a vehicle downtown after a special dinner on Main Street.
The off-street parking program was launched as a pilot program in 2020 in response to demand created as a result of the pandemic.

During the pilot, which ran from Dec. 23, 2020 to April 15, 2021, nearly 100 permits were issued.

That increased the following year to 536.
