One of the people killed in the mass shooting in Vaughan on Sunday was the maternal grandfather of Maple Leafs defenceman Victor Mete.

The Leafs released a statement after the victims were identified.

“The Toronto Maple Leafs are shocked and saddened by the tragic shooting that took place in Vaughan this past Sunday,” the Leafs said in the statement. “Our hearts go out to Victor and his family, to all the families and friends of those affected, and to the local community.”

The suspected shooter, Francesco Villi, was shot and killed by a police officer in the building.

Mete, a native of Woodbridge, signed a one-year contract with the Leafs in July. The 24-year-old has two assists in 11 games this season, but has not played since Dec. 6, when he suffered a lower-body injury in a game against the Dallas Stars and subsequently was placed on injured reserve.
