The City of Vaughan has announced that it will be taking over The Sports Village, a major recreation facility within the city.

The features of the village include four professional-sized hockey rinks, five outdoor beach volleyball courts and an outdoor sports park measuring 30,000 square feet. The venue runs regular hockey leagues for multiple age groups and skill levels, and also runs its own restaurant, the Hot Shots Bar & Grill. It plans to run a similar league for beach volleyball in the summer under the Oasis Beach Volleyball League branding. The rinks and other facilities are also available for private rental. The City acquired The Sports Village from Mentana Group, which had previously owned it.

In a statement, Mentana owner Tony Furiato spoke on the future of the venue:

“I am grateful that Mentana Group and the City of Vaughan partnered to build such an impacting sport legacy. The Sports Village is entering a new phase and I am delighted that the City of Vaughan is committed to build on the success of the past.”

The Sports Village will be part of Vaughan’s sports and recreational facilities. The facilities attract over two million visitors per year, and could attract more as part of the city’s systems. Municipal governments often use tools such as brochure printing or websites to spread awareness of services available.

The City of Vaughan’s acquisition of The Sports Village was announced on December 3, effective immediately.
