York Region has issued a cold weather alert and Newmarket is offering spaces to stay warm.

The town is opening up the Ray Twinney Recreation Complex and the Magna Centre as temporary warming centres during regular hours. This comes with the region issuing a cold weather alert, done when temperatures are forecasted to be -15 degrees celsius or colder with or without wind chill in the next 24 hours.

Both the Ray Twinney Recreation Complex at 100 Eagle St. West and the Magna Centre at 800 Mulock Dr. are both open Monday to Sunday from 5:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. for warming.

The town and region ask anyone experiencing homelessness looking for shelter during a cold weather alert to call the Emergency Housing Central Intake Line at 1-877-464-9675 ext. 76140.

The town said to stay warm, limit exposure to the extreme cold weather, keep yourself well protected and remain indoors. It also advised avoiding alcoholic beverages as they can cause your body to lose heat more rapidly.
