Hamilton:
Andrea Horwath, known for being an Ontario NDP leader in the recent past, will now start a different political chapter as the mayor of Hamilton. Horwath served three terms on Hamilton’s city council, starting back in 1997. Despite that experience, she was almost beaten by Keanin Loomis, but managed to snag the spot. She also beat Bob Bratina, who previously served as mayor and a Hamilton MP.

Horwath’s run as provincial NDP leader was significant as the party secured its status as the official Opposition, but failed to form government.

Vaughan:
Steven Del Duca’s just made a comeback by being elected the mayor of Vaughan. His previous period in the spotlight started in 2020 when he became Ontario’s Liberal party leader. Under his leadership, the party only gained one more seat. After a provincial loss, Del Duca stepped down. At this point, he has narrowly beat out some tough challengers for Vaughan mayor, including Sandra Yeung Racco, who has served five terms on city council.

Ottawa:
The city’s new mayor will be Mark Sutcliffe, a former journalist. He received over 50 per cent of the vote. His main rival was Catherine McKenny, a city councillor who was in the spotlight when she fought against “Freedom Convoy” protests in February. A former Ottawa mayor, Bob Chiarelli, also ran and lost. Notably, Ontario has now granted Ottawa “strong mayor” powers. This next city has them too.

Toronto:
John Tory is the one, at least when it comes to being mayor. He has now locked in his third term as the leader of the most populated city in the whole country. While Tory leaned on his experience as the reason to vote for him, he had to fight of Gil Penalosa, who has gained a reputation as a progressive urbanist. Penalosa’s online and offline campaign drove home Toronto’s need for road safety, affordable housing, and livable city planning. Tory’s demonstrable experience and familiar face still snagged over 60 per cent of the vote.

Brampton:
Incumbent mayor Patrick Brown has earned his second term despite allegations of financial and contract irregularities. City council has been divided by pro-Brown and anti-Brown lines. He even faced sexual misconduct allegations, for which he stepped down from the provincial Progressive Conservatives. Still, he gathered many more votes than the other rivals, including Nikki Kair, now known as a whistleblower against city officials.

London:
This city’s mayor will be Josh Morgan, a city councillor since 2014, who made housing affordability the first priority in his campaign. Morgan, who became deputy mayor in 2020, won convincingly over Khalil Ramal, a former provincial parliament member.

(Bonus) Milton:
Gord Krantz is believed to be Canada’s longest-serving mayor but his streak almost ended. He beat out Zee Hamid by less than 1,000 votes. This is in stark contrast to 2018, when he got 82 per cent of the vote. Still, he did enough to secure his 14th term as the mayor of Milton.
