oyee Nikki Kaur, the former mayoral candidate’s employment with the city has ended, according to an internal personnel dispatch obtained by the Star -- as Kaur claims she was terminated.
As first reported by Global News, interim chief administrative officer Paul Morrison sent an an email to members of council shortly after 3 p.m. Tuesday, informing them that Kaur -- a director in its planning, building and economic development division -- was “no longer working for the city of Brampton.”
“We thank (Kaur) for her service at the city and wish her well in her future endeavours,” it reads.
In a statement distributed Tuesday evening by lawyer Scott Lemke, Kaur claimed she was terminated due to allegations she had made of “wrongdoing and mismanagement” at Brampton city hall. “I will not be silenced and will never stop standing up for what is right,” Kaur’s statement read, before noting that she had retained legal counsel, who would issue any further comment on the matter on her behalf.
Kaur had taken a leave of absence during her mayoral campaign, Lemke said. Preliminary results from Monday’s vote showed Kaur winning 25.55 per cent of ballots to Brown’s more decisive 59.65 per cent.
The City of Brampton declined to comment on Kaur’s employment status when reached Tuesday evening, with spokesperson Megan Ball writing that the city “does not comment on individual personnel matters.”
As Kaur’s statement pointed a finger specifically at Brown, the newly re-elected mayor’s office declined to comment as well, with director of communications Gary Collins also labelling the issue a “personnel” matter in an email.
Prior to the mayoral campaigns this year, Kaur held a different role with the city, working as a director of corporate projects, policy and liaison -- but she was terminated from that role in April 2021 after claiming wrongdoing by senior Brampton officials, the Star has previously reported. She was later reinstated and returned to city hall.
