The Lake Simcoe Conservation Authority honoured the Town of Aurora with the 2022 Healthy Water Award during its 40th annual Conservation Awards ceremony.

The award recognizes projects that improve support, or protect the water quality of the Lake Simcoe watershed.

Aurora's award-winning project was a low impact development (LID) inspection and maintenance training workshop for municipalities in the Lake Simcoe watershed. LIDs include systems such as rain gardens and bioswales that mimic natural water cycles to protect waterways from pollutants. The workshop not only improved municipal knowledge sharing, such as how to extend the service life of their LID features and save on operating and maintenance costs, but also encouraged collaboration on the overall health of the watershed.

“We are honoured to receive the Healthy Water Award and that our contributions are making a positive difference in protecting the water quality in the Lake Simcoe watershed,” said Mayor Tom Mrakas. “And what makes me particularly proud is that this award recognizes our efforts at supporting and working with other municipalities to help create a sustainable and healthier watershed in all of our communities.”
