York Region wants your help to name a brand new pollinator garden on Bayview Avenue.

The region planted a new garden in Richmond Hill just south of Bethesda Sideroad this summer, with community members planting an array of native plants. Now, the region is holding a contest asking for submissions.

“Thank you for helping York Region transform the grass area ... to an environmentally friendly pollinating bee and butterfly meadow,” the region said. “Together we planted more than 1,000 native plants.”

The garden is intended to support the local ecosystem, helping local pollinators and providing a destination for residents to learn about them.

“Pollinators support our ecosystem that clean the air, stabilize soils, protect from severe weather and support other wildlife by cross-pollinating, a process that allows plants to produce vegetables, fruit and seeds needed to create more plants,” the region said.

The region will place the winning name on a permanent sign installed on the meadow. The individual with the winning submission will receive a prize pack of pollinator-themed items.

The contest runs to Oct. 10, with no eligibility requirement, though York Region said it reserves the right to exclude offensive or inappropriate submissions. You can submit by visiting york.ca/projectpollinator. The winner will be announced Oct. 28.
