Georgina is hosting a ceremonial flag raising for National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
In partnership with the Chippewas of Georgina Island, the event will include a flag raising and smudging ceremony along with a drummer.
The ceremony will be held Sept. 30, 10 a.m. at the Civic Centre, 26557 Civic Centre Rd.
National Day for Truth and Reconciliation honours the lost children and survivors of residential schools, their families and communities.
Residents are invited to attend the event, commemorating the tragedy of residential schools in Canada and the continuing impact on Indigenous communities.
Earlier this year, the town officially unveiled two Every Child Matters crosswalks -- one spanning across Black River Road at the Island View Business Centre to the Georgina Island ferry dock and the other crossing on Dalton Road at Black River Road in Sutton.
The orange crosswalks are completed with white feathers and the words “Every Child Matters” can be read in either direction. They were designed to bring awareness that all children matter and the adult survivors of residential schools continue to heal from the trauma.
Funding for the crosswalks was provided by the Regional Municipality of York.
