All four-legged friends are welcome as Georgina “unleashes” its new leash-free dog park.

The official opening of the leash-free dog park is Sept. 24 at 10:30 a.m.

The new park, located outside the Georgina Animal Shelter and Adoption Centre, 26815 Civic Centre Rd., features both small and large dog areas as well as shade structures in both park areas for furry friend parents.

Residents will have the chance to meet York Regional Police therapy dogs and there will be a community barbecue fundraiser in support of the animal shelter.

Along with officially opening the town’s second leash-free dog park, Animal Services is hosting a cat adoption blitz for those looking for the purrfect addition the family. Adoption fees include spay or neuter, vaccination, deworming and a one-month flea treatment.

The town budgeted about $100,000 in the 2022 budget for the creation and construction of the new leash-free dog park -- the second leash-free park in town. The original leash-free dog park is located at 685 Lake Dr., south in Keswick.

Earlier this year, the town announced $1.4 million for a new multi-season sports zone on the Pefferlaw Ice Pad, which includes a multi-sport surface and a new nearby skate park. If the budget allows, residents in the area want to see another off-leash dog area as part of the Pefferlaw park plan.
