NAME: Ty Ty Nguyen

OCCUPATION: Business owner and mother

ADDRESS/WARD: Ward 3

POSITION YOU ARE RUNNING FOR: Candidate for city councillor

PREVIOUS POLITICAL EXPERIENCE: Never ran as a candidate previously, but have volunteered in previous provincial and federal campaigns.

WHY HAVE YOU DECIDED TO RUN?

Vaughan is an amazing city, but we have many challenges such as affordability and traffic safety and gridlock. We need to do better if we want to maintain a high standard of living and quality of life. I want to be a strong advocate for our residents at City Hall, and that’s why I am running.

HOW WILL YOU EMBRACE AND CHAMPION DIVERSITY?

As a woman of colour and boat refugee from Vietnam who came to Canada over 35 years ago, I know the challenges of growing up in an unfamiliar environment. When talking to residents at the doors I am hearing that City Hall and its Staff do not reflect the demographics of its residents.

One of my goals, if elected, would be to promote more folks that look like me to apply for administrative and managerial positions at City Hall. Equally important, I would like to encourage and recruit more people from diverse backgrounds to run in municipal elections. Finally, as a potential leader in the City I want to ensure that all citizens of Vaughan regardless or ethnicity, religion, sexual gender to feel that they belong in this wonderful City of Vaughan.

WHAT ARE YOUR TOP THREE ISSUES?

1. Keeping property taxes low.

2. Improving traffic safety to protect our residents and communities.

3. Providing open, honest and quick responses to your requests and concerns.

IF ELECTED, WHAT DO YOU PLAN TO ACCOMPLISH IN YOUR FIRST 100 DAYS?

Municipal politics is very important in most people’s lives as it is the level of government that is most relevant to the average citizen. Unfortunately, we do not have enough engagement from the average citizen. My goal is to change that dynamic to get more of our citizens engaged by having regular town hall meetings with my constituents and be accessible.
