Markham Stouffville Hospital and Uxbridge Hospital are looking to recruit medical, nursing, allied health and support work professionals at a recruitment event taking place Saturday, Sept. 17.

Statistics Canada reported in June that Canadian health care employers have the highest ever level of job vacancies -- 136,800 positions were reported in Q1 of this year -- suggesting a major staffing crisis for the nation's health-care system.

The combination of an aging population, shrinking labour force and inefficiencies in recruiting and registering overseas health care professionals has led to a major health care worker staffing crisis across the country and threatens the timely delivery of health services in many communities.

On Sept. 17, health care employers from across Canada will meet, interview and make employment offers to health care professionals at the Healthcare Job Fair, which takes place at the Sheraton Centre Toronto Hotel, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is free for jobseekers with online registration required.

Markham Stouffville Hospital is on the list of participating employers.
