Toronto has pushed back $42 million of paving work on city streets until next year.

That means 20% of the scheduled work this year will be completed in 2023, making a bumpy ride on some roads.

“The City of Toronto cancelled three Request for Tenders (RFTs) for road resurfacing work on local and residential roads in the summer of 2022. These tenders included resurfacing work in 22 of Toronto’s 25 wards, however the majority of the work in these tenders was slated to begin and be completed in 2023,” said city spokesperson Brad Ross.

“Following a review of the bids submitted for the RFTs, City staff had concerns with some of the bids, so it was determined that the RFTs required further clarification. When changes are required in an RFT, the process is to cancel the solicitation and issue a new RFT with the changes.”

Ross says to have a fair, competitive and transparent procurement process, the changes will be made to the bid requirement.

Retendering is planned to take place this fall.

The city has repaired 151,197 potholes to date this year.

Potholes happen when water penetrates the top layer of asphalt through cracks.

After the water freezes and expands, the pavement are forced up.

The weight of vehicles going over the road breaks the pavement.
