Don’t jinx it.

But the unpredictable winter is only a few short months away.

And Georgina has opened applications for its windrow snow removal program for the upcoming winter.

The windrow removal program is open to the first 500 eligible households, and applications close Oct. 15.

Windrow is the pile of snow at the end of the driveway created by snowplows after they clear the road.

After a minimum 7.5-centimetre snowfall, town crews will remove snow from the end of residential driveways within 24 hours after the roads and sidewalks have been plowed.

Snowplow crews will clear about 7 feet, or one car width of snow, from the end of the driveway.

The windrow removal service does not include clearing snow from private walkways, the entire driveway or windrow left behind the sidewalk plow.

Eligibility for the 2022-2023 winter includes:

All members of the household must be 65 years old or older, providing proof of age with a government ID; or

All members of the household must be 65 years old and younger and are physically unable to remove snow, providing a doctors’ note or disability certificate for each member of the household.

Residents are required to reapply each year for the service, which runs typically between Nov. 15 and March 15.

The town is looking at establishing a permanent windrow program -- with a permanent budget -- for the 2023-2024 winter season.

Last winter, more than 260 applications were received and more than 760 windrows were cleared.

Applications are available online or in person at the Civic Centre at 26557 Civic Centre Rd., or at any Georgina Public Library branch.
