The City of Vaughan is hiring for the 2022 municipal election. You can earn anywhere between $140 and $342. You can apply online until Tuesday, Oct. 11.

What’s Required

To be eligible to work on voting day, Monday, Oct. 24, potential candidates must be at least 18 years of age, legally eligible to work in Canada, and have received a full series of the COVID-19 vaccine in accordance with the City of Vaughan’s COVID-19 vaccination policy.

Training will have a mandatory online component as well as job-specific in-person training, which will take place at Vaughan City Hall prior to voting day. Pay is dependent on completing both required training and duties on voting day.

2022 Municipal Election Positions

The MDRO is responsible for managing a large voting place with four or more staff and ensuring voting is conducted in accordance with the election procedures.

Duties:

• Picks up voting place equipment and supplies them before voting day
• Oversees the opening and closing of the polls
• Manages voting place staff
• Ensures voters are provided with a positive customer service experience and the accessibility of the location is maintained
• Ensures voter turn is recorded hourly by the Tabular Deputy Returning Officer (TDRO)
• Distributes ballots to the Deputy Returning Officers (DROs) and accounts for all ballots in a statement at the end of voting, signs in candidates and scrutineers and monitors candidate/scrutineer activity, assists other election officials as necessary and completes all necessary paperwork

 

Pay: $342

Tabular Deputy Returning Officer (TDRO)

The TDRO is responsible for operating and supervising the vote tabulator in a voting page.

Duties:

• Picks up the tabulator prior to voting day
• Assists with setting up the voting place
• Processes ballots with voters, resolving problems as necessary
• Feeds ballots into the vote tabular
• Records an hourly total of voters processed
• Assists with closing the voting place
• Returns the tabulator to city hall

 

Pay: $306

Deputy Returning Officer (DRO)

The Deputy Returning Officer (DRO) processes electors, revises their information and issues ballots using forms and lists in a computer equipped with election software. When assigned to a single-poll voting place, the DRO shall also be responsible for managing the site.

Duties:

• Manages the supplies and ballots at assigned voting place
• Processes voters, administers oaths and issues ballots
• Completes all necessary paperwork
• Sets up, opens and closes poll
• Processes voters’ list revision forms to add voters or to correct information on the voters’ list
• Ensures voting is conducted in accordance with the election procedures

 

Pay: $306

Customer Service Officer (CSO)

The Customer Service Officer (CSO) welcomes voters into the voting place and provides direction to them while they are present to vote. The CSO will also be responsible for sanitizing ballot marking pens and other shared consumables throughout the day.

Duties:

• Greets voters on entry into the voting place
• Assists voters in presenting the appropriate identification and Voter Information Letters (VILs)
• Answers questions from voters
• Guides voters to the appropriate location

 

Pay: $306

Standby Officer

Standby Officers are trained as DRO/TDRO/CSO and attend the Ward Centre at the start of voting day. Standby Officers are employed to fill vacancies where hired staff assigned to voting locations quit or fall ill before assuming their duties. Standby Officers who are assigned to a voting location to fill a vacancy will be paid the full daily rate for DRO/TDRO/CSO.

Duties:

• Prepares to be sent to fill any role at a voting place
• May process voters as a DRO, operate a tabulator as a TDRO, or greet voters and sanitize sites as a CSO
• Completes all necessary paperwork
