Prominent political figure Deb Schulte is pulling out of the City of Vaughan mayoral race amid a cancer resurgence.

Schulte was previously diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, and her experience of having cancer was well publicized. She underwent treatment in 2019 and again in 2021, both during election campaigns.

The treatment trials this time will be different, requiring longer hospital stays and restrictions on driving and activities.

“It is with much disappointment that I have decided to withdraw from the mayor’s race in Vaughan. Over the past few days, I have received and assessed the new treatment schedule and required restrictions and have determined that I would not be able to mount a thorough and respectful campaign,” said Schulte in a press release.

The trial is to start in early September and will require many hospital visits over the course of many months.

“I have too much respect for the community and my support team to try and run a campaign with me in treatment for these many days,” added Schulte. “I cannot be assured of a positive result and would not want to put the position at risk should I be elected mayor and the outcome not be favourable.”
