Last-minute entry aims to unseat incumbent Markham mayor

Here is a look at who is running for municipal offices in the 2022 election

Markham’s incumbent mayor Frank Scarpitti has not officially registered vying for a fifth term in office until the last week of registration. It looked like Markham’s incumbent mayor might be acclaimed.

When the currently Deputy Mayor Don Hamilton made his announcement to run for mayor and filed his papers just in time for the deadline, he is the only candidate to run against incumbent mayor Scarpitti.

The veteran councillor stated the reason to join the mayor race on Twitter, “It's Time for Change!”

The post “Frank or Don” gets voted up on Reddit after the registration closed at 2 p.m. on Aug. 19.

In the 2018 election, Scarpitti won the mayor race in a landslide with 55,553 votes. Hamilton got the highest votes (31,952) among candidates running for regional councillors.

There were quite a few of last-minute entrants to join the Oct. 24 Markham municipal election. In the end, 72 people registered to run in the election: 2 for mayor, 11 for regional councillors’ and 28 for councillors' seats as well as 30 for school board trustee positions.

Incumbent Regional Councillor Jack Heath, Ward 7 Councillor Khalid Usman are not seeking re-elect. Currently Ward 2 Councillor Alan Ho is running for regional councillor office.
