Mosquitos in Vaughan test positive for West Nile virus

Mosquitoes caught in a trap near Weston and Rutherford roads in Vaughan have tested positive for West Nile virus.

According Dr. Barry Pakes, York Regional Medical Officer of Health, positive mosquitoes are the first indication of the presence of the West Nile virus each season.

"While the chance of being bitten by an infected mosquito is very low, there are many precautions we can take to stay safe when enjoying the outdoors," Dr. Pakes said.

West Nile virus is only transmitted if bitten by an infected by mosquito, and is not transferrable from person-to-person.
