Georgina Fire and Rescue Services recently participated in BeGrainSafe, the Canadian Agricultural Safety Association (CASA)’s grain safety program.

Together with G3, a grain-handling company with a facility in Hamilton, Georgina firefighters were equipped with hands-on grain rescue training.

The BeGrainSafe program, a first of its kind in Canada, brings lifesaving training across the country to rural fire departments with a mobile grain safety trailer and a firefighter training course.

A fleet of 40 full-time and 36 volunteer firefighters participated in the BeGrainSafe training, where firefighters learned what it felt like to be trapped in a grain bin using a simulated grain container with wood pellets instead of corn or grain.

“Preparing our firefighters with more experience in responding to these types of rescues enables us to assist our rural community,” said Fire Chief Ron Jenkins.

Being stuck in corn or grain can quickly become dangerous, as the grain resembles quicksand.

Through the hands-on training simulation, Georgina firefighters learned how to safely extract a person trapped in grain using a cofferdam and auger. The cofferdam creates a barrier between the victim and the grain, while the auger helps firefighters move the grain away from the victim.

The BeGrainSafe program works to bring awareness to and education and training in the dangers of moving grain.
