Michael Chan, the veteran Ontario politician and former cabinet minister in the Ontario Liberal government of Kathleen Wynne, announced running for regional council in Markham in the upcoming municipal election.
On Aug. 8, Chan made the announcement on Twitter.
“Excited to share the news that I have just registered to run for Regional Councillor in Markham,” he tweeted.
Before the announcement, Chan met a group of Markham residents in a gallery on Aug. 3.
Chan said he had some health issues in 2018, but he was told by his doctor he is now “in very good health.”
Chan was Ontario’s international trade minister before announcing his retirement from provincial politics in April 2018, a few months before the next Ontario election.
