When the new members of Caledon council get their first paycheque serving the town as municipal representatives this fall, they will see a larger number than what the outgoing members of council see.
In July, during council’s last meeting, councillors approved changes to the salaries and expenses for the people who will serve in the next term -- which will result in a $132,678 operating budget increase in 2023.
The mayor will get $116,830 compared to the current salary of $98,625.
Each councillor will be compensated $49,841 -- a boost from $40,080.
Councillors who also sit on the Region of Peel council are also paid a salary and benefits from the Region of Peel.
Council salaries and expenses were reviewed by ML Consulting, which was hired for the task in preparation for the 2022 municipal election and as a result of a recent ward boundary review, which changed the composition of regional council. Caledon went from having five members at regional council to three, including the mayor.
The changes will align council salaries with the 60th percentile of the market.
There were also tweaks to the expenses for council members.
The review found there was an increase in need for community engagement and events, increased demand for staffing resources to plan and support events but less need for office supplies.
The changes to expenses will mean an additional $9,500 allocated on the town’s operating budget.
Caledon council salaries were last reviewed and adjusted in 2015. The changes do not include cost of living increases, which will be determined during the 2023 budget process.
Councillors Annette Groves and Tony Rosa didn’t support the changes during a July 12 committee meeting.
Groves said the decision should be made by the next term of council.
