Stouffville council has voted to hold at least one evening council meeting a month, in addition to daytime meetings.

Earlier this year, Stouffville council decided to hold only daytime meetings during the next term of council starting after the October election. But council amended the decision following a motion made by Ward 6 Coun. Sue Sherban.

She said that daytime-only council meetings had caused some potential candidates not to run in the election.

Sherban also cited neighbouring municipalities like East Gwillimbury, Newmarket, Georgina, Aurora and King that all hold evening council meetings.

Ward 3 Coun. Hugo Kroon was alarmed that as the 2022 municipal election nears there are so few candidates signing up to run in Stouffville. “For me that’s not a good situation. When I first ran it was because nobody opposed the guy running,” he said.

Kroon went on to the say that as much he benefits from not being opposed, the other part of him is concerned about the democratic process.

Council voted to hold at least one evening council meeting a month starting at 7 p.m. with the daytime meetings at 10 a.m.
