Promenade Shopping Centre has reopened after a fire forced the evacuation of the Thornhill mall earlier Thursday.

Video posted to social media showed plumes of black smoke billowing from the building in the area of Bathurst and Centre streets. Police say they were first called about the fire around 10:30 a.m.

Vaughan Dep. Fire Chief Grant Moffat said the fire started inside the kitchen of a restaurant and then went through the roof. Police originally said it began inside a supermarket.

The entire mall was soon evacuated as a precaution.

There were no reports of injuries.

Vaughan's fire investigator will be investigating the cause and origin of the fire, Moffat says.
