The Town of East Gwillimbury is flying its flags at half--mast at all its facilities in honour of former longtime councillor, school board trustee and community volunteer Frank Kelly.
He passed away July 27 at the age of 94.
Kelly served as an East Gwillimbury councillor from 1985 to 2000, and was trustee, vice--chair and chairman of the York Catholic District School Board beforehand.
He received several awards of recognition for his work in the community, including the town's Volunteer of the Year Award in 2001. He was also a member of a housing co--op in Sharon that led to the construction and opening of Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Elementary School.
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus (St. Thomas of Villanova Council) in Newmarket and was a charter member of the Holland Landing and District Lions Club.
“Former councillor Kelly served the residents of East Gwillimbury for many years. His dedication to East Gwillimbury extended far beyond his work as a councillor as he was also an active volunteer in our community,” East Gwillimbury Mayor Virginia Hackson said in a news release.
Flags at all town facilities will be flown at half--mast to honour the former councillor, and the public is invited to sign the book of condolences, which will be available at the East Gwillimbury Civic Centre on Wednesday, Aug. 3.
