Ah, Canada Day. The barbecues, the patios, the drinks. The cottage visits and getting together with family and friends. The only addition that would make the long weekend complete is knowing what is open and closed. Here’s a guide:
OPEN
RETAIL
- Malls: Some malls, including Markham’s CF Markville Mall and Thornhill’s The Promenade Mall, and Newmarket’s Upper Canada Mall and Richmond Hill’s Hillcrest Mall are open Canada Day, July 1, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
- The Beer Store: 87 Ontario stores will be open on Friday, July 1. Only one of these stores is in York Region: It’s in Vaughan at 7850 Weston Rd., open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
SERVICES
- GO Transit: Will operate on a Saturday schedule. Visit gotransit.com for more details.
- YRT: The York Region Transit bus routes that are operating will do so on a holiday Sunday schedule. Please refer to yrt.ca or call the York Region Transit contact centre at 905-762-2100 or toll-free at 1-866-668-3978 for more information on the routes you are interested in.

- LCBO: The LCBO will be closed on Canada Day
- Loblaws: Loblaws recommends customers check their local store’s website for holiday hours as they may vary by location.
- Metro and Food Basics stores: Most of the Metro and Food Basics stores will be closed, except for some located in cottage country and tourist areas, according to the company’s communications manager Geneviève Grégoire.
- Sobeys: Many Ontario locations are closed for Canada Day. All stores are open for regular hours on Saturday, July 2 and Sunday, July 3. Two York Region Sobeys stores are open Canada Day: Sutton --- 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Bradford --- 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.
- Canada Post offices will be closed on Friday, July 1 with no collection or delivery of mail on that day. However, post offices operated by the private sector will be open according to the hours of service of the host business.
