When Caledon residents head to the polls on Oct. 24 to vote for who will represent them at the town and Region of Peel, there will be three familiar names absent from the list.

Mayor Allan Thompson and regional councillors Johanna Downey and Ian Sinclair will not be seeking re-election.

“I want to congratulate you on your years of service and commitment to this community,” said Thompson to Downey and Sinclair during the last official meeting of council on July 19.

After serving on Caledon council for 19 years, Thompson announced in March he would be stepping away from municipal politics.

He served two terms as mayor -- and became known as the “Broadband man” for his advocacy work to bring high-speed internet to the community.

“He always had Caledon’s best interest at heart,” said Downey.

Sinclair first got on council in 1994 serving as both area and regional representative until 2003.

He took a 15-year break from municipal politics before returning to the regional position in 2018.

“Sinclair brought a wealth of historical knowledge to the position,” said Thompson.

Downey was elected as regional councillor in 2014.

She served as vice chair of Credit Valley Conservation, representative on Niagara Escarpment Commission and was the lead on the human trafficking file at the region.

The deadline for candidates to register for the municipal election is Aug. 19.
