Deputy Chief Brian Bigras, who began his career with the York Regional Police when he was 19, has announced his retirement.

Bigras joined the service in 1990 and his assignments over the last 32 years have included uniform patrol, criminal investigations, drug and vice, holdup, and training and education.

Prior to his appointment as Deputy Chief of Investigations in 2019, he served as commander in charge of Organized Crime and Intelligence Services.

“It has been an honour and a privilege to have worked alongside Brian,” Chief Jim MacSween said in a statement. “I admire his incredible passion for the profession of policing and to supporting our members and community. I am so thankful for his leadership, professionalism and friendship over these many years.”

Aside from his policing career, Bigras also had a commitment to his community, where he worked closely with local organizations. He was also a big champion of the Holiday Heroes campaign, which raises millions of dollars for those in the community in need.

“Over the course of his exemplary career, Bigras has served the residents of York Region with commitment and professionalism,” said Vaughan Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua. “On behalf of the Police Services Board, I extend our gratitude for his numerous contributions to York Regional Police and the community.

Bigras’ retirement is effective in September.

The Board will begin looking to recruit an internal candidate to take over his role.

“I joined York Regional Police as a 19-year-old recruit who wanted to make a positive impact on my community,” Bigras said. “Over the past three decades, I’ve had the opportunity to do just that -- and so much more.”

“I am so grateful to have served with an organization that is truly dedicated to its community and its members,” he said. “I’m proud to have supported York Regional Police as it continued to grow and evolve to meet the needs of our region.”
