Everything is coming up roses for 10 York Region graduating high school students, thanks to the Canadian Federation of University Women Aurora/Newmarket.

On June 18, the organization held a home and garden tour, with $27,000 in proceeds from the event along funds from community partners going to the students through CFUW’s scholarship fund.

With CFUW women looking to make a different in the lives and education of young people in the community, the organization awarded $1,500 to each of the students.

“From the minute the first guest arrived (at the event), I saw delight, joy, and true pleasure on the faces of the visitors,” Jean Fraser, a member of the tour steering committee, said.

“We extended our work into the community and raised the profile of CFUW. We showed that together we can accomplish great tasks. One member told me that we weren’t just fundraising, we were ‘friend-raising’.”

The winners are:

The Mary Pegg Educational Award of $10,000, presented to a female graduating student at Newmarket’s Huron Heights Secondary school, was given to Caitlyn Hunt-Coffin, who will attend Sir Wilfrid Laurier University.

The family also awarded $2,500 to Newmarket High School student Emma-Jeanne Brown.

Also, $1,500 was given to a female student who is a former Crown ward of York Region Children’s Aid Society.

“Scholarships help students make choices about their future. Proceeds from our successful home and garden tour make these choices possible for young women in our community in the years to come,” Pam Jones, awards chair of the charitable trust, said.
