York Region is opening up eligibility for fourth dose COVID-19 vaccinations but will be doing so by appointment only.

Fourth dose distribution will be expanded at clinics July 14 starting at 8 a.m., along with the rest of the province. Adults aged 18 to 59 will be able to book a fourth dose if it has been at least five months since their previous one, though York Region will require this to be done via its booking system at york.ca/covid19vaccine.

“While most individuals aged 18 to 59 years old will continue to have strong protection more than six months after their first booster dose, expanding second booster dose eligibility will ensure that Ontarians can make an informed decision based on their personal circumstances,” the region said in its newsletter July 13.

The province announced the change in eligibility today in the wake of a new wave of the pandemic. Previously, only those 60 and older or in a vulnerable group were able to get another booster dose.

The region has maintained a vaccination clinic at its community and health services building at 17150 Yonge St. in Newmarket, though has several others throughout the region.

Walk-ins for other doses are still available at regional clinics, including first and second doses, as well as a first booster dose. The region has also indicated those previously eligible for the fourth dose in vulnerable groups can also walk in. The region said there is a limited walk-in capacity and to be prepared to wait and dress for the weather.

There are no new clinics yet announced for the region. Medical officer of health Dr. Barry Pakes said he was confident the region, along with its health partners, could handle the expanded eligibility over the next several weeks.

"Whether you need your primary series (first or second dose) or a booster, find a clinic near you and get vaccinated to protect yourself from severe outcomes of COVID-19 infection,” the region said.

Vaccination bookings will also be available through pharmacies and Ontario’s provincial COVID-19 vaccination portal.

The region also offers in-home vaccinations for those with challenges attending a clinic. You can call 1-877-464-9675 to see if you qualify and to work out arrangements.
