Aurora town council has approved a new modernized fence bylaw.

The new fence bylaw sets standards for fences in Aurora that include specific rules around the fence height, type of structure and materials used.

The rules vary depending on whether the fence is on a residential property or non-residential property and whether the fence is used to enclose a pool.

“Our community is growing, and staff have seen an increase in the number of inquiries related to the fence exemption process,” said Mayor Tom Mrakas. “The new fence bylaw includes clearer definitions, enhanced enforcement abilities and updated provisions that will allow for a more efficient process for residents and staff.”

An applicant is able to request a variance under the bylaw. For a variance, the applicant will submit the application and fee and the request will be brought by staff to a council meeting for consideration. All variance requests would be decided by members of council and would be final.

Provisions to the bylaw would allow officers to write an order to comply and remediate non-compliance, that will assist staff in addressing any issues that pose health and safety concerns.
