A new fire hall has opened in a growing neighbourhood in Downsview where more than 1,000 homes were recently built.

Fire Station 144, located at 2945 Keele St. at the southwest corner of Downsview Park, officially opened July 8.

The new facility, designed by Thomas Brown Architects, includes a green roof and also houses Toronto Fire Services' fire investigations team.

The City of Toronto said the station, which is the 84th fire hall in Toronto, is "strategically located" in close proximity to more than 1,000 new homes.

"This new fire station will provide the residents of Downsview with the assurance and peace of mind that first responders will arrive at an incident or fire in time to prevent deaths, injuries and property damage," York Centre Coun. James Pasternak said in a news release. "With residential and commercial growth planned in the area for the coming years, the opening of this facility now supports the philosophy that safety comes first and seconds count.”

Fire Chief Matthew Pegg said in the release that in addition to serving as an operational fire station, the facility is "home to our Fire Investigations team, providing the specialized space and facilities that are required by this unique and specialized unit, including secure storage and decontamination areas.”
