A good neighbour lends a hand in a moment of need. On May 21, an EF-2 tornado touched down in Uxbridge, leaving behind extensive damage. The township declared a state of emergency, which will remain in effect while they receive support and resources from aid organizations and other levels of government.

There was also extensive damage in parts of Whitchurch-Stouffville.

The Whitchurch-Stouffville Legacy Fund (WSLF) is lending a hand to both Uxbridge and Stouffville residents.

The fund presented a cheque for $25,000 to Uxbridge Mayor Dave Barton. The money will be deposited with the Rotary Club of Uxbridge Charitable Foundation and used to assist those in the neighbouring municipality who have been displaced because of the tornado.

“As a result of the tornado, we now have at least 40 individuals in Uxbridge who no longer have a roof over their heads,” Uxbridge Mayor Dave Barton said. “We are grateful to our neighbours in Whitchurch-Stouffville and the WS Legacy Fund for their support in rebuilding our community.”

“Being able to support a neighbouring community is not only a good thing to do, but the right thing to do,” board chair Greg Smith said. “My fellow board members and I are pleased to be able to assist Uxbridge residents in their time of need.”

The WSLF also announced today that $25,000 in funds is now available to Whitchurch-Stouffville residents in need of financial support to pay for damages to their property caused by the recent storm. Residents may receive 50 per cent of their expenses reimbursed up to a maximum of $500 per household. If you have already paid to have work completed on your property, please send an email to grants@wslegacyfund.com to receive an application form for reimbursement. This one-time application intake period closes on August 31.

Those wishing to make financial donations toward a relief fund can do so via the Rotary Club of Uxbridge Charitable Foundation or can contact uxbridgerotaryfoundation@gmail.com.

The Whitchurch-Stouffville Legacy Fund (WSLF) was created to help support the financial needs and efforts of local service groups and charities who work to enrich the lives of Whitchurch-Stouffville residents.
