Mackenzie Health celebrates 1-year anniversary of 2nd hospital opening

It’s been one year since Mackenzie Health made history by opening our second hospital, becoming a two-hospital organization. Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital opened as a full-service community hospital to serve the residents of Vaughan, King, Richmond Hill and surrounding communities on June 6, 2021.

That opening day came four months after the new hospital opened, caring exclusively for COVID-19 patients as part of the provincial pandemic response. In those months, the most challenging wave of the pandemic we had experienced to date, we helped save the health-care system from collapse.

This past year hasn’t been easy for anyone, least of all for the health-care workers who took on extra shifts, worked overtime and volunteered to be deployed to other units, supporting colleagues who needed extra help.

The resilience of Mackenzie Health staff, physicians and volunteers is what allowed us to open our second hospital while still caring for the volumes of patients we continued to see each day in Richmond Hill, including our network of community-based locations, during the height of the pandemic.

That’s why we’re celebrating both Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital’s first birthday and our entire Mackenzie Health family.

The opening of Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital last year could not have come at a better time for our community. Mackenzie Richmond Hill Hospital was consistently operating over capacity and we had one of the busiest emergency departments in the entire province.

The City of Vaughan was the largest city in the country without its own hospital, and our part of York Region was already growing at a rapid pace.

Even now, a full year after adding a second emergency department to serve our community, we’re still seeing high volumes of patients at both hospitals. In fact, within months of opening Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital, we had already exceeded our projected volumes for both our emergency departments.

We consistently see more than 600 patients per day across both of our hospital sites.
