Live music and free barbecue by a cosy pond on a fine summer afternoon. It can’t get any better than that, can it?

A group of senior residents from across Richmond Hill enjoyed sizzling meat hot from the grills and classic music live from the Pepper Shakers band at the Mill Pond Park on June 3.

The two hours’ fun and feast were free for those who are 55 years of age and older as the city began this year’s celebration of the growing age group.

At the event, Jurij Nowickyj received the Senior of the Year Award. He runs a computer learning program at the McConaghy Seniors Centre.

The barbecue is the first of a series of in-person events that the city is hosting throughout June to celebrate the growing 55+ population in the community.

Residents who are 55 years and older are invited to register for upcoming seniors events, including an ice cream social on June 15 when older adults can enjoy live performances by the Parker Wilson Duo, featuring vocalist Aubrey Wilson and pianist Teri Parker.
