The City of Richmond Hill is kicking off this year Seniors Month with a free barbecue for those who are 55 years of age and older, to celebrate the growing age group in the city.

Featuring live entertainment by the Pepper Shakers band, the event is scheduled for June 3 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Mill Pond Park. No registration is required. At the event, the city will also recognize the Senior of the Year Award recipient.

The barbecue is the first of a series of in-person events that the city is hosting throughout June to celebrate the growing 55+ population in the community.

In 2016, there were 55,330 adults age 55+ years living in Richmond Hill, according to the census that year. There are expected to be 84,817 adults age 55+ years living in Richmond Hill in 2041, according to the city’s report on needs assessment released this May as part of the city's Age-Friendly Community initiative launched last summer.

In the 2021 census, the median age of the Richmond Hill population has increased to 43.6 years in 2021; this age is nearly six years higher than it was in 2006.

Residents who are 55 years and older are invited to register for upcoming seniors events, including an ice cream social on June 15 when seniors can enjoy live performances by The Parker Wilson Duo, featuring vocalist Aubrey Wilson and pianist Teri Parker.
