Here’s what it will cost to plug in an electric vehicle at Region of Peel charging stations

Come September, it won’t be free to plug your electric vehicle into a Region of Peel charging station anymore.

Staff have recently drawn up a pay-rate schedule for public use of the region’s 72 electric vehicle charging stations, that span across 19 properties in Caledon, Mississauga and Brampton.

This will be a pilot program and any adjustments to permanent fees will be recommended by staff in the 2024 budget process.

It costs an average of $43,000 a year to run the stations, charging both public vehicles and the region of Peel’s growing electric fleet.

Now, public users are going to be asked to pay an hourly rate for charging, in line with what average hydro rates are in the community.

The cost will be $1 an hour for level two chargers, which take anywhere from two to 10 hours to charge up.

For the faster level three chargers, which can be ready in anywhere from eight minutes to two hours, the fee is $7.80 an hour.

These fees are going to be prorated for use of the machines.

In a recent report to council, staff say there’s currently a problem with vehicles staying parked and plugged into the stations long after they’re fully charged.

They hope this fee system would help deter that.

Staff expect a dip in the use of charging stations once the fees are in place but say that with the growth of electric vehicle use across the community, the use should grow in the long run.
