York Region police warn of distraction thefts targeting seniors, vulnerable people

York Regional Police is reminding residents to be cautious when approached by strangers in public places following a significant increase in distraction thefts in Vaughan.
During the past two weeks, multiple incidents of theft occurring at residential locations have been reported.
Police say the majority of the incidents have targeted elderly and vulnerable victims who were walking outside their residences between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m.
According to police, a man driving a vehicle and a woman passenger approach victims and ask for directions. Once directions are given, the suspects tell the victim they want to give them a gift, which is a fake gold chain. The female suspect will hug the victim and swap the fake gold chain for real jewelry worn by the victim.
Both suspects are described as possibly Middle Eastern, in their 50s, with average builds and dark hair.
Police urge any additional victims of this type of theft to come forward.
