Want to take a step back in time at your own pace?
Newmarket is giving you that chance beginning this weekend with its Virtual Main Street self-guided tours.
Starting on May 28, you can be transported back to the town’s early days by visiting downtown and participating in a self-guided virtual tour to learn more about Newmarket’s rich history and heritage.
"Two things that residents consistently tell me they love about Newmarket are the downtown and the town's history,” Mayor John Taylor said.
“Virtual Main Street marries the two, bringing the history of many of Main Street's landmarks to life in an engaging and approachable way. In bringing the history out onto the street and into the palm of your hand, these vignettes give shoppers and diners more reasons to visit, explore and stay downtown."
The self-guided tour pairs local artists’ inspiring works with videos that will take you back in time to learn more about 17 historic buildings on Main Street.
You can stop by Cachet Supper Club, Fresh Tea Shop, Brokerllnk Insurance, Bike Sports, The Irv at The George, The Hair Company, Hungry Brew Hops, Neon Flamingo, Old Town Hall, 205 Main St., Chip and Malt, Goulash House/future home of Cardinal Press Espresso Bar, Brain Power Studio, 171 Main St., Roadhouse and Rose. Old Flame Brewery and Elman W. Campbell Museum.
While there, hover your smartphone over each window poster to open your historical video tour.
A portal will open where you will meet members of the community telling stories of Main Street’s past, brought to life with historical imagery. You will also learn more about several artists.
