A Markham group is calling for all Black women who share a passion for helping the community through volunteer work.

The eight chapters of the Congress of Black Women in Ontario collaborate to plan programs and events to assist Black women and their families.

The Markham chapter is the most recent one to emerge and they are on a membership drive to source motivated members.

The non-profit organization's vision is to build community and empower Black women, creating a space for Black women to come together to exchange ideas, identify and discuss the challenges and solutions that are vital to the progress of the Black community. They also offer scholarships to university/college students.

Started by Kay Livingstone in 1973 with a focus to address the concerns of Black women, the Congress once had chapters all across Canada. Now the organization aspires to open more chapters across Ontario and plans to re-establish chapters that have recently closed.

Women who align with the mission and vision of the Congress, and are at least 16 years old, are encouraged to get involved. In addition to learning new things, this group offers the opportunity for team building and socializing for members, friends and families.

In the past, the group has held workshops and conferences related to personal finance, wills and estate planning, and entrepreneur networking.

The Congress of Black Women Ontario will be hosting a series of financial literacy workshops on July 23, August 13, and August 20, 2022.

These workshops will be virtual, and will target young adults, particularly those who may be starting university and/or already in university, and students who are about to graduate.

However, vice-president Mariska Thomas said these workshops are also open to anyone in the community who want to learn more about how to manage their finances more efficiently and effectively.
